The RedJade® Suite includes a library of various types of questions to help you build questionnaires for multiple kinds of tests. You can add and customize questions from the library, create your own questions and save questions to your own library for reuse. You can also create a shared library for your organization.

Add Questions to a Questionnaire

The RedJade® Suite includes many question types you can work with. The following example demonstrates how to add questions to a questionnaire.


To add questions to a questionnaire:

  1.  From a project, locate the test and click on the Surveys tile.



  2. From the Surveys page, select [ADD QUESTIONS] next to the questionnaire to modify. 



  3. The page displays blank on the left and the library on the right.

    NOTE  Discrimination questionnaires are created with the default question already added, according to the discrimination type selected. See Create a Discrimination Questionnaire.



  4. Select a library on the right from which to add questions. Click on the + and - signs to expand and collapse the sections. Select a question to view it and click on the + on the question to add it to your page. You can also enter a search term to locate a question.

  5. Click on the question to open the configuration window.

  6. Using the tabs on the right, configure the question details.

  7. Click anywhere off the window to close it. The question updates on the page.



  8. To add another question to the page, click on the + next to a question from one of the libraries.


  9. When finished with a questionnaire, click on the X in the upper-right corner of a questionnaire to close it. If you have outstanding changes, you will be prompted to save. RedJade returns you to the Surveys page for the test.




Configure a Question and Response

Use the Response Configuration region to customize and configure the question and responses. Edit the question text in the Question Text Editor. Edit and add response choices below the question text. You can also move, configure or delete responses. 




Click on the gear icon to configure a response, including adding media, specifying a fixed position or requiring an explanation if the response is chosen.

  • Fixed Position – If Randomize Responses is checked, then this response is always presented in this position. For example, a "None of the Above" response may be fixed in the bottom position.
  • Require Explanation – This response requires an explanation before clicking on NEXT. For example, a "None of the Above" response may require an explanation.
  • Exclusive Response – This response clears all other responses. For example, a "None of the Above" response may clear all other responses.


To configure a question and response:

  1. Click on the question to open the configuration window.


  2. Enter the question in the Question Text Box. Use the editing tools to format it as desired.



  3. Enter the question responses in the Response Configuration fields.



  4. Click on +RESPONSE to add a response.



  5. Click on the settings icon to configure a response.



  6. Click on the red X to remove a response.



  7. Select the move icon to drag and reorder the responses.



  8. When finished, click anywhere on the page to close the Configuration Window or proceed to configuring the information in the tabs on the right.

Paste List of Responses and Groups

In addition to entering question response text in fields one-by-one, you can copy and paste a list of response text from an external document, such as Microsoft Word, to add/update the response labels all at once. Groups on grid type questions can also by copy/pasted to.

NOTE – Pasting response lists is supported on standard question types. It is not currently supported for specialty questions, such as: Vertical Table Orientation, Line Scales, Conjoint, Semantic Differential, Association, Text Highlighter and Temporal Questions.

To copy and paste a list of responses:

  1. From an external document or source, select and copy the list of responses.


  2. Click on the question to open the configuration window.



  3. Click in the response field of the first blank response. Paste the copied response text list.



    Alternatively, select/highlight existing response text and paste over-the-top to replace it.


    Depending on the content you are copy/pasting, the following behavior may occur:
    • Pasting a single line of text or cell from a table will update the selected response field.

    • Click & drag, or press Ctrl+A from your keyboard, to select/highlight all existing response text and paste over-the-top to replace it. Existing response text will not be replaced/updated unless selected. New responses are automatically added as needed.

    • Pressing the Enter key from an existing response jumps down to the next line of response text.
    • Pressing the Enter key from the last response adds a new response.
    • Pressing the Shift+Enter keys will insert a new response below the current selection.
    • Pressing the Shift+Delete keys will delete the current selections.
    • Pressing the Ctrl+V keys will paste copied content.
    • Pressing the Ctrl+Shift+V keys will paste special and ignore additional line breaks within a cell of a table.

    When copy/pasting multiple rows/lines of text or cells from a table:
    • Pasting into an empty (blank) response field populates that field first and any other empty (blank) response fields below it, then will automatically create new responses as needed to populate any other pasted lines of text. 
    • Pasting into an empty (blank) response field when there are fields with existing text below it populates the empty (blank) response first then will automatically create new responses below it as needed to populate any other pasted lines of text.
    • If you select a response field that has existing text, the following will occur based on the placement of the cursor:
      • Cursor placed at the beginning of the existing text, new responses are added above.
      • Cursor placed in-between or at the end of the existing text, new responses are added below.
      • Select/highlight existing text, the current response is updated with the first line of pasted text and new responses are added below for any additional lines of text.`
    • Pasting from a horizontal table will automatically transpose the response list.
    • Tables with multiple rows and columns will paste row-by-row from left-to-right.
    • Paragraph breaks, line breaks or tab marks within the cell of a table will be treated as separate lines of text (responses) using the default paste option (Ctrl+V). You can press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste special and ignore additional line breaks within a cell of a table.
      Alternatively, to remove the breaks if your source file is Microsoft Word:
      • Press Ctrl+* to enable "Show Editing Marks" and display the hidden formatting symbols in Word. 
      • Press Ctrl+H to "Find and Replace", and find "^p" (paragraph) or "^l" (line) or "^t" (tab), then replace with a "space". Choose to "Replace All".


  4. The response text list is added to the existing responses and additional responses are automatically added as needed.




Add a Page to a Questionnaire

In addition to adding questions, you can add multiple pages to a questionnaire.


To add a page:

  1. From the bottom of a questionnaire page, click on Add New Page.



    A new page is added below the previous one.




Reorder Questions in a Questionnaire

If you are not satisfied with the order of questions in the questionnaire, you can move them around and reorder them on the page or move them from page to page.

NOTE – When question trigger types exist on the page, a warning will display to check the question selection on trigger logic within the page.


To reorder questions on a page:

  1. From the question configuration, locate the up/down arrows in the top bar. Click to move the page up or down accordingly.


  2. From the question configuration, locate the [Question Text] drop-down menu in the top bar. Click and select a new question from the drop-down. The current question is moved above the question selected from the drop-down.

    NOTE – To move a question to the bottom/last on the page, select the last question then use the move arrow to step it down one.



  3. From the question configuration, locate the ellipses icon in the upper left corner.



    Hover the curser over the ellipses icon until it changes to the cross-arrows icon.


    Click and drag the icon to move the question to the desired location in the questionnaire.




Insert a Page Break

Page breaks can be inserted between two questions on a page.

NOTE – When inserting page breaks the existing page settings are copied to each new page that questions are broken out to. When deleting page breaks the existing page settings from the bottom page are discarded, only the page settings from the top page are retained. 


To insert a page break:

  1.  Select a question on a page, click on the Page Break icon.

    The question is split to a new page.




Copy a Question on a Page

Copy an existing question to save time in configuring similar questions. Move it to the desired location and configure it, as desired. 


To copy a question on a page:

  1. From the question configuration, click on the Copy Question icon.

    A duplicate question is added to the page. You can modify the configuration, as needed.




Save a Question to a Library

Save time in configuration by adding a commonly used question to your library. You can then add the question to any questionnaire you build and modify it, as needed.

To save a question to a library:

  1. From the question configuration, click on the Save to Library icon.


  2. Select the library from the drop-down list where you wish to save the page template.



  3. Select the folder or check Create New Folder and add one.



  4. Complete the Template Name, then click on [SUBMIT].


    The page template is saved to your designated library.




Delete a Question

You can delete questions you no longer need.

NOTE – If data has been collected, deleting the question will also delete its results in analyses. To preserve the question's existing data, instead of deleting it, add a trigger that will effectively cause the question to never be asked. For example:
  • a question based trigger, from a single selection question, using the the answer condition "is exactly this", with all the answers checked.


To delete a question:

  1. From a question configuration, click on the Delete Question icon.


    Click on [OK] to confirm.
