Groups Source allows you populate the groups of a grid question with the answers selected, or not selected, from a previous question.

For example:

  • In the first question you may ask "Which brands do you purchase?" using a multiple selection question type:
Note - this is the question you will use as the Groups Source in the next questions

  • In the next question you then ask "How often do you purchase each of these brands?" using a single selection grid question type. In this question you want the groups to be the exact answers selected in the previous question:
Note - this is the question you select the Groups Source from

  • Alternatively, In the next question you could ask "Why do you not purchase these brands?" using a multiple selection grid question type. In this question you want the groups list to be the responses not selected in the previous question:

Add and Work With Questions details the steps to add a question to a questionnaire page and Configure Question Options details additional configuration options available.

To configure an Groups Source:

  1. Create a question and enter the response list. This is typically a multiple selection question. This will be the question selected as the Groups Source in the next question.

  2. Create a grid question and enter the response list, do not enter any groups. From the Options choose the previous question from the Groups Source drop-down list.

  3. The groups list is hidden and only the responses display.

Specify whether to display the answers Selected or Not Selected from the Groups Source question.

If using Groups Source from a previous Grid Question, also choose the applicable answers from the Answers include any of these list.

  4. When the questionnaire displays in preview or while taking the survey, the answer choices from the first question are the groups of the next grid question.

NOTE – It's possible to have no responses display on a question using a Not Selected Groups Source from a Multiple Selection question, if all of the responses are selected as answers on the previous question. In this case the next question's text with no groups would still display, however, the required validation would not be applied allowing the participant to proceed. To prevent the question's text from displaying in this scenario, on the question using the Groups Source add a trigger to only ask it if the previous question "Does not contain all of these" or "Is not exactly this" with all Answers checked.
