Implicit Association captures unconscious thoughts and attitudes towards products or ideas. RedJade's Implicit Association testing records the amount of time to capture a response and the binary answer, e.g., agree/disagree, applies/does not apply, good/bad, healthy/unhealthy, etc. Data is captured through keystrokes assigned by the user, or when enabled by clicking buttons or swiping on a mobile devise.
Test Setup is completed in the same way as all tests within RedJade.

By default the left text should always be negative and the right text should always be positive. - Click on [+ADD RESPONSE] to add response stimuli that will be evaluated in the Implicit Association test. Enter the stimuli names. Click and hold the vertical ellipse [ ⁝ ] icon to drag and Reorder Responses. Click on the red X to Delete Responses.
Optionally, to add images click on the⚙️settings icon next to a response, then click on [ADD MEDIA]. See Add Media to a Question's Response. - Under the OPTIONS tab to the right, specify the Response Randomization, Key Mappings, and available display options.
- Response Randomization – Randomize the order of the response stimuli.
- Key Mappings – Configure the keyboard keys pressed to answer the question. Keys should be both far apart and easy to distinguish. The default key mappings are K (Agree) and D (Disagree). Optionally, add a key mapping to Skip. Click Edit Keys to choose other key mappings, the mapping includes upper and lowercase in case Caps Lock is on.
- Countdown Time – Provides a delay after clicking begin, allowing the participant to prepared before the first stimuli displays.
- Time Between Answers – The delay time between submitting an answer and the next stimuli appearing on the screen.
- Time Between Answers Variance – The Time Between Answers can vary +/- from stimuli to stimuli. For example, if a 100ms Time Between Answers is specified with a 20% Variance then the actual time between stimuli can be anywhere from 80ms to 120ms. With 100% Variance the time between can be from 0ms to 200ms, and with a 0% Variance the time between would always be 100ms.
- Show Questions Instructions – Display instructions for the participant before they click begin to start the evaluation. This allows them to get familiar with the instructions and set their fingers on the mapped keys prior to starting the evaluations.
- Show Key Map Instructions – Automatically display the mapped keys and their answer values below the question instructions and text.
- Enabled Swipe Response (coming soon) – Allows participants to answer by swiping left and right from a touch screen device.
- Enabled Button Response – Allows participants to answer by pressing on screen buttons from a touch screen device.
- Enabled Speed Limits – Enforce how fast answers need to be entered. If not enabled, the participant can take as long as they would like to answer.
- Max Retry Attempts – The number of times a missed/unanswered stimuli is reshown. The retry attempts display at the end, after all other stimuli has been seen. If set to 0 or left blank, the missed/unanswered stimuli is never reshown and remains unanswered/skipped.
- Min Response Time – The minimum amount of time a participant must wait before providing an answer for the next stimuli.
- Max Response Time – The maximum amount of time a stimuli displays before it's automatically skipped.
- Warn on Speed – Display a popup message if the participant answers faster than the Min Response Time (i.e., Too Fast) or slower than the Max Response Time (i.e., Too Slow).
- Min Response Message – Custom pop-up message to display when participant is answering "Too Fast".
- Max Response Message – Custom pop-up message to display when participant is answering "Too Slow".
- Click anywhere off the window to close it. The question updates on the page.
- Click on [PREVIEW] to review an example of how the question appears for participants.
- Click the [Begin] button or enter one of the mapped keys to start the evaluation.

- Answer by pressing one of the mapped keys, or when enabled by pressing a answer buttons or swiping left/right from a touch screen devise.
- The next stimuli automatically displays, continue responding.
- When Speed Limit is enabled, if no answer is entered by the Max Response Time, the stimuli is automatically skipped.
- Optionally, if Warn On Speed is enabled a pop-up message displays warning to answer faster, or slower if they are answering before the Min Response Time between stimuli. Click [OK] or press a mapped key to continue.
- The next stimuli displays, continue responding.
- Once all stimuli have been answered, the "All answers have been recorded." message displays.
- Click the [NEXT] button to continue to the next question or submit the questionnaire.
- When finished with the questionnaire, click on the X in the upper-right corner of a questionnaire builder to close it. If you have outstanding changes, you will be prompted to save. RedJade returns you to the Surveys page for the test.
Implicit Association Topline Results
Topline results for Implicit Association provides the mean response time and total counts for each of the prompted stimuli. Raw Data can be downloaded to Excel and includes the individual answers and time required to complete the question.
Example data output is displayed below:
Topline Results
- Topline results display in separate tabs for each sample evaluated.
- Each of the prompted stimuli is listed along the left side
- There are columns for each answer (Affirmative Response, Negative Response, Skip) with mean response times (in milliseconds) and total selection counts for each.
Raw Data

- Raw Data includes the Participant Code (design block line) the Participant Name, the Start and End Time for the Survey as well as all survey responses.
- Implicit Association Questions are displayed in two columns per prompted stimuli or Image including the answer and the time for the response (in milliseconds).
