Тhe media upload question allows participants to upload photos, video and audio recordings with their survey responses. Participants can either select an existing media file or use their mobile device to take a new picture or recording to upload. You can choose to allow one or multiple files to be uploaded, as well as optionally enable comments or photo editing. Uploaded files can be viewed and downloaded from the test's Topline Analysis.
The standard media upload question is available (with options limited) at no additional cost to all users. A premium upgrade license is required for full access to all confiuration options:

Create a Media Upload Question
To create a Media Upload question you select the Media Upload question from the Basic Library and complete it.
To add a media upload question:
- Create a questionnaire and add questions.
- Select the Media Upload question from the Basic Library, Specialty Questions folder and click on the [+] button to add it to your questionnaire.
- Click on the Media Upload question to open the configuration window. Customize the question text as desired.
- Under the OPTIONS tab to the right, select the Media Type and specify which settings to enable:
NOTE – Only one media type can be specified per question. For participants to upload more than one media type, add a new media question for each. Use a preceding question to trigger the media questions and allow participants to choose which media types to upload. A premium upgrade license is required to have move than 1 media question per test. - Media Type – Choose the file type to capture or upload. The following file types/extensions are supported:
- Image – .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .webp
- Video – .mp4, .webm, .ogg, .m4v, .mov, .avi, .mkv, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, .mpv
- Audio – .mp3, .wav, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .m4a
- Allow Photo Editor (Image) – Participants can edit the file before submitting the upload, such as rotate, crop or mark-up images. A premium upgrade license is required.
- Allow Trimmer (Audio) – Participates can remove some of the audio recorded at the beginning or end of the recordings. A premium upgrade license is required.
- Enable Audio Transcriptions (Video/Audio) – Automatically transcribe video and audio recordings. A premium upgrade license is required.
- Allow Comments – Participants can optionally enter comments about each media file they upload.
- Require Comments – Choose to make the comments required.
- Max Image/Video Resolution – The quality of the media files after they have been uploaded and processed. A premium upgrade license is required to adjust this setting.
- Fastest – Up to 720p for Images and 480p for Videos (default option for standard tier)
- Medium – Up to 1080p for Images and 720p for Videos. (default option for premium tier)
- Highest Quality – Up to 4K for Images and 1080p for Videos.
- Max Length (Video/Audio) – The maximum recording time for video/audio recordings. Up to 30 second, or 5 minutes with a premium upgrade licenses, per recording.
- Min / Max Upload Count – Specify the number of files that can be uploaded within a question. The minimum and maximum number is enforced. The default is set to 1 file min/max. Up to 9 image files and 3 video/audio files can be uploaded per media question with a premium upgrade license.
NOTE – Only valid file types/extensions for each media type are allowed. Unsupported file types, such as executable (.exe) files are automatically blocked for security reasons. Upload times will vary depending on the size of the file and internet connection.
Optionally, to allow a participating to opt-out or skip uploading files, use trigger logic. For example:- Add a single selection question with responses: "Yes, I want to upload files" and "No, I am unable to upload a files". Place it before the media upload questions.
- On the Media Upload questions, add a question based trigger referring to the question above with the Condition: "Includes Any of These" and Answers: "Yes..."
- If the participant responds "Yes..." then the Media Upload question displays. If they respond "No..." the Media Upload question is hidden and no longer required. The participant can click next to continue.
- Media Type – Choose the file type to capture or upload. The following file types/extensions are supported:
Click anywhere off the window to close it. The question updates on the page.
- Click on [PREVIEW] to review an example of how the question appears for consumers.
NOTE – Uploaded files are not saved through the previews. They are temporarily displayed until the page it closed or refreshed. - Click the Capture button from a mobile device to take a photo or record. Click [Save] to submit and upload the file.
- Alternatively, you can Drag & Drop, or Click to Upload File from your computer or mobile device.
- A circular progress bar displays while the file is is uploading and processing. Upload times will vary depending on the size of the file and internet connection.
Once the upload completes, a thumbnail of the file displays:- When enabled, the participant can click the pencil button to edit button to rotate, crop, mark-up images, or trim audio recordings.
- Optionally, click the trashcan button to delete and recapture a new photo or recording.
- When enabled, the comments field displays for the participant to provide additional feedback about the uploaded file.
- Optionally, the participant can click the (+) button to upload additional files if enabled.
- When done, click [NEXT] to continue to the next page or questions or to submit the survey.
When finished with the questionnaire, click on the X in the upper-right corner of a questionnaire builder to close it. If you have outstanding changes, you will be prompted to save. RedJade returns you to the Surveys page for the test.
View and Download the Media Files
The uploaded files get saved to the test along with individual responses and can be viewed and downloaded from the test's Topline Analysis. The files are labeled by participant id and sample identifier for reference. Participant uploaded files are accessible for up to 6 months after which time the files are permanently deleted from RedJade's storage. Files should be downloaded and stored outside of RedJade for long-term retention.
To download the uploaded media files:
- From the main menu, select ANALYSES.
- From the Analyses dashboard, search for the test and click on [VIEW].
- Select the questionnaire name under Topline Analysis from the left sidebar to view the results. The Media Upload table displays a tile with a thumbnail preview of the media files.
- Sort by Newest (default), Oldest , Most Liked, Least Liked, or My Favorites.
- Select the number of media thumbnails to display – 10 (default), 25, 50, or 100 items per page.
- Click the
icon in the bottom right corner of the table to view the next page of media file in the list.
- Click the ❤️ icon on a thumbnail to Like a media file as a Favorite. The count to the left of the ❤️ icon indicates how many total users, including yourself, have liked it.
- Click the
icon to view the transcriptions text of video/audio files.
- Click the
icon to view comments provided by the participant.
- Click the
icon to download the individual media file.
- Click a media file thumbnail to open in a slideshow view.
From the Slideshow view, click the arrow icons to scroll through each file. Comments display below the media. Like, download or click X from the top-right corner to close the slideshow. Click on Download Raw Data or Topline Analysis download button from the left sidebar to export the results to Excel. Both include the media upload responses with a link to view or download individual files.
Select the tab for the questionnaire with the media upload questions to view a list of file links and liked counts. When enabled participant's comments and recording transcriptions are also provided. Click a link to view an individual file.NOTE – You must be signed in to RedJade to view the individual media using the urls in the Excel file. To download all of the uploaded media files at once, click the ⁝ icon to the right of the [Download Raw Data] button and select Download Media Files.
The media is downloaded in a zip file, grouped in folders by questionnaire, with each file named by participant code, sample identifier and question number for reference.Participant uploaded files are accessible for 30 days, or 6 months with a premium upgrade, after which time the files are permanently deleted from RedJade's storage. Files should be downloaded and stored outside of RedJade for long-term retention.
An email notification is sent to the project owner 30 days, 10 days and finally 5 days prior to the participant uploaded media files being permanently deleted.
