Descriptive Analysis provides a basis for understanding product similarities and differences. To perform a descriptive analysis, you can use data you've generated within RedJade or you can import a data workbook generated externally. When you import a data workbook, RedJade identifies and makes default choices from the data, which you can then refine. You can import files up to 16MB in size.
NOTE – The workbook file must contain a complete dataset on one worksheet. If the data exists on more than one worksheet, the data must be merged onto one worksheet before import. |
Worksheet Formatting and Requirements
Verify the following additional formatting requirements and restrictions before importing:
- The data worksheet requires a heading row with column names. Columns labeled Repetition, Product ID and Subject ID are required, as well as multiple Data columns.
- The Data columns must be contiguous and to the right of the Repetition, Product ID, and Subject
ID columns. Data column headings must be less than or equal to 120 characters in length; excess characters will be truncated. Data column headings must be unique; an error message will display and the import will terminate. The Product ID column must contain at least two Product IDs; otherwise, an error message will be displayed and the import will terminate. This application is meant for product comparisons.
Product IDs may be any alpha-numeric characters less than or equal to 80 characters in length; excess characters will be truncated.
- Each Product ID must have at least one set of scores with 2 repetitions (does not need to be from
each subject); otherwise, the product will be excluded from the study.
For example, Product ID 5 in the following table has only 1 Repetition each from Subject ID 1001 and 1002 and
therefore Product ID 5 will be excluded. Yellow cells represent this violation. Subject IDs may contain any alpha-numeric characters less than or equal to 30 characters in length; excess characters will be truncated.
Data cells may contain positive integer or decimal values (including zero) or be empty; empty cells indicate
that no response was recorded. The heading row cell contents are an Attribute and optional Region, Modality, and/or
Time Stamp.- Repetition cells must contain positive integers.
Subjects must have at least two repetitions for at least ⅓ of the products tested; otherwise, the subject will be excluded from the analysis.
For example, Subject ID 1001 in the table below has 2 Repetitions for Product IDs 1 and 2, but only a single
Repetition for Product IDs 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Thus, the Subject ID 1001 has “at least 2 Repetitions” for 2 of the 7
Products tested, which is less than the “at least ⅓ of the Products tested” required. Therefore, Subject ID 1001 will be
excluded. The green cells represent this violation. Each attribute must contain at least one score from each subject; otherwise, the attribute will be excluded from the study.
For example, attribute Topcoat in the table below has no scores from Subject ID 1002. Therefore, attribute
CCoatOAP will be excluded. Light blue cells represent this violation. Each attribute must contain at least one score from each Product ID; otherwise, the attribute will be excluded from the study.
For example, attribute RippleOAp in the table below has no scores from Product ID 1. Therefore, attribute
RippleOAp will be excluded. Light gray cells represent this violation.

Properly Formatted Worksheet
To import descriptive data:
- From the main menu, select ANALYSES.
- Click on [IMPORT DATA].
- Enter a Name and a description for the project, if desired, then click on [CONTINUE].
- The Import Type defaults to Descriptive Analysis. Click on [BROWSE FOR YOUR FILE] or drag the file to the window. You can import files up to 16MB in size.
- Locate the file on your computer, then click on [OPEN].
The import function identifies all the worksheet names, makes default choices for the data worksheetand column pointers and displays the first most qualified attribute (Region, Modality, Time).
- Complete the Sensory Test Name.
- Select the Data Worksheet from the drop-down list.
- Enter the Scale Value. The Scale Value specifies the maximum value of the Descriptive Analysis scales used during data collection. The value specified will be the default for future Descriptive Analyses. After importing, you can not change the Scale Value.
Select the Repetition, Samples and Subject Column headings.
Select the First Data Column to identify where the data begins.
- Select the Region/Modality Position and Region/Modality Selection from the drop-down lists.
- Select the Panel, if any.
- Click on [IMPORT DATA].
Once the import and initial analysis completes, you can view and work with the data in the newly created Descriptive Analysis.
